A Case Study on Club Culture in the 1980s
In the 1980s, the Riviera Romagnola became a key hub for a cultural revolution that transformed both the musical and visual landscape of nightlife. The rise of club culture marked the beginning of an unprecedented creative movement—one that spread across Europe, with major centers in Spain, Germany, and England, as well as in the United States. This era redefined the way nightlife was communicated, setting new standards in visual identity and promotion.
I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, immersed in an environment where graphic design and communication were evolving at an extraordinary pace. Designing flyers for iconic venues such as Matis in Bologna, Echoes and Pascià in Riccione, and Pineta Club in Milano Marittima became an invaluable creative training ground. The work demanded both speed and innovation, pushing the boundaries of design within the fast-moving nightlife industry.
Disclaimer! The following video is an excerpt from the docufilm Riviera Clubbing – The Movie, for which I have no credits whatsoever, but it serves as an excellent testament to the vibes of that era.
Music and Design as Identity
Over time,my collaborations expanded beyond national borders, leading me to curate the graphic design for the legendary N.E.X.T. nights at Espace Julien in Marseille, at the height of the techno movement. At that time, in just a few weeks, the crowd could move from a concert by The Orb inside the Nîmes Arena to an all-night rave in massive marble caves near Arles, and then to Absolute Humidity, an unforgettable party held inside the city’s swimming pools—one of the best memories of my life. It was all about music and love, a true season of love that continued in other parts of Europe.
This wave of creativity led me to Berlin and Dortmund, where I was invited ( together with Matis Club Team) as a special guest by DJ Marusha, who had also played several times in Bologna. While in Berlin, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the city’s avant-garde press and flyer design, discovering influential publications such as Frontpage and the iconic techno book Localizer 1.0. These experiences broadened my vision of club culture’s visual language, reinforcing the deep connection between music, art, and design in shaping the movement’s identity.
David Morales and Diridim Rec.
For several years I have been working with one of the most iconic figures in House Music, David Morales.
Our professional relationship continues today, as I design graphics for his audio releases, which are regularly featured on his social media channels and streaming platforms.
The transition from print flyers to digital media was seamless, but physical prints still hold a unique and irreplaceable value for me. This case study explores the essential role of visual communication in club culture, examining how nightlife aesthetics have shaped graphic design, advertising, and visual storytelling, bridging the gap between technological innovation and creative experimentation.
