About Me

GIANLUCA BERNARDINI

Between Art, Design, and Education

My journey has always been a blend of creativity, strategy, and education. With extensive experience in design, visual communication, and teaching, my work spans multiple disciplines—from illustration to art direction, visual design, and academia.

Educator and Lecturer

Teaching is a fundamental part of my career, and I have pursued it with passion at some of Italy’s leading Fine Arts Academies. I am currently a tenured lecturer at the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts, where I teach Publishing for Fashion Design within the Graphic Design programme, Elements of Editorial Design in the two-year Master’s programme in Comic Languages, and Graphic Design 1 in the newly established Master’s programme in Graphic, Interaction and Videogame Design. I also teach Publishing for Fashion Design and Fashion Environment within the Fashion Design programme at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts. Over the years, I have also taught Fashion Design at the Palermo Academy of Fine Arts and CERFORM in Sassuolo, covering various subjects related to fashion and visual communication:

  • Fashion Design Publishing
  • Fashion Styling and Set Design
  • Fashion Materials and Textiles Culture
  • Fashion Design
  • Business Logic and Organization

The latter course stems from my close relationship with the industrial production sector. During my years leading Latveria Design, I worked with demanding clients in the fashion industry, where understanding market mechanisms, production chains, development processes, and brand strategies was crucial. This hands-on experience has enabled me to bring a real-world perspective to my courses, bridging the gap between academia and industry. I provide students with not just theoretical knowledge but also strategic and practical insights into the professional landscape.

Art Director and Visual Designer

Alongside my academic career, I work as a Senior Art Director at Studio Makoto in Bologna, a leading agency specializing in branding, communication, and digital media. Previously, I spent over twenty years directing Latveria Design, where I served as President and Art Director, developing visual strategies and communication plans for fashion and textile brands. My approach is rooted in research and experimentation, always keeping an eye on evolving technologies and contemporary design trends.

Illustrator and Painter

Before fully immersing myself in design and communication, I worked as an illustrator and painter. My artistic journey led me to exhibit in both Italy and abroad, including “Action One” in Karachi, “Exposition d’Apres-Garde” in Marseille and Nadsat in Pavullo, Italy . Art remains a key component of my visual language, continuously influencing my work in design and creative direction.

Experience and Innovation

My professional journey began with collaborations with major fashion brands such as Avirex, Vans, and Meltin’Pot, where I developed a strong strategic vision in visual communication. In 2012, I co-founded the Design Management Center (DMC), an association dedicated to innovation through Design Thinking and Strategic Design, helping organizations embrace creative methodologies for growth.

Technological and Digital Expertise

Always eager to explore new technologies, I am currently experimenting with Artificial Intelligence tools for image and video generation, including Midjourney, Leonardo, Arcana, Kling and Runway. These tools expand the expressive and creative potential of design, allowing for innovative new approaches.

THE ULTIMATE GOAL

My work aims to be a balance of research, teaching and creative direction

Whether I am training new talent, developing visual strategies for brands, or exploring new digital languages, my ultimate goal remains the same: to merge creativity, innovation, and design culture to bring impactful and original visions to life.
